Life Community: Local and Overseas Missions Consultations
The Presbyterian Church in Singapore (PCS) is commemorating its 140th anniversary this year. In conjunction with the anniversary, the Synod Missions Committee (SMC) has decided to organise two Missions Consultations, one for local missions and one for overseas missions, with the theme: Life Community. The local Missions Consultation is tentatively scheduled to be held in late August this year. However, due to Covid-19, it is currently undecided whether the consultation will be held physically or virtually. There will be a total of three conferences as part of the Consultation, touching on the following topics:
The Overseas Missions Consultation will be postponed to 2022. The Synod Missions Committee hopes to be able to hold it in a physical setting, and plans to invite churches from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Nepal, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Korea to participate. To further build up on and enhance the work of the Missions Consultation, the Synod has set up a Ministry Team to work with SMC, and has started getting in touch with the abovementioned countries. Through virtual meetings online, the discussion on the theme “Life Community” is now ongoing, on various possibilities for collaborations and mutual learning through missions. We have since spoken to Gereja Presbyterian Malaysia (GPM), The Presbyterian Church in Myanmar (PCM), Synod Presbyterian Churches in Cambodia (SPCC), and Gereja Kristen Indonesia (GKI) respectively. Following the Missions Consultations, the committee plans to consolidate the reports and findings from the consultations, and discuss on the feasible recommendations to be put into practice. The Ministry Team has begun a review of our past Missions experiences, and in future, together with the findings, we hope to be able to come up with better missionary strategies for SMC. For the local Missions Consultation, the Ministry Team has also begun to visit local Presbyterian churches to learn through mutual exchange and sharing. Through the gathering strengths of different churches, the team hopes to come up with strategies for local missions and share them with the rest of the churches, so that all can learn and grow together.
