The Presbyterian Run & Walk 2014
By Dr Kevin Lowe, HUB Development Manager
Dec 2014
Minister for Health and volunteers
The Presbyterian Run and Walk 2014 was successfully held on the 8th of November 2014 at the East Coast Big Splash at 7.30am (10km Competitive Run) and 7.50am (3 km Family Run and Walk). Over 1,200 participants (400 and 800 for the Competitive and Family categories respectively) came for this first ever Presbyterian Run Event as part of our fund-raising effort for the Presbyterian Hub Project.
If not for the weather forecast and the heavy downpour that ended just minutes before the flag offs, several hundreds more would have made their way there. God was indeed gracious; He answered the prayers and faith of his people as dark and thick clouds loomed nearby. Real time weather satellites also showed wind direction blowing them straight into our race path. It was no surprise that our God, the Lord of the sea and sky easily re-directed the elements and granted us a memorable day; we give Him all the thanks, glory and honour. More poignantly, it appeared to signal God's hand and assurance over the Hub project for which we will continually rely on.
Besides the participants, over 200 volunteers worked tirelessly, both on that day as well as the weeks towards the run up of the event, liaising with authorities, preparing the route, drinks, goodie bags, prizes, publicity, medical team, aerial drone photography, logistics and staging etc. We want to thank each and everyone for their wonderful contribution. Special thanks are also in order for the 12 sponsoring companies that filled our souvenir goodie bags. Our deep appreciation goes to our Guest of Honour, Minister For Health and fellow Presbyterian Elder, Mr Gan Kim Yong, for gracing our event with his presence and encouraging words, as well as from our Moderator, The Rt. Rev. Philip Leow Khee Fatt.
Finally, we want to thank God for the success of this event and for the commitment and effort of the organizing committee, under the guidance of Rev. Dr. Steven Gan, together with the many unsung heroes. Special thanks must be made to the volunteers from Amazing Grace, True Way, Covenant, Providence, Holy Grace Presbyterian Churches and The Presbyterian Schools; their involvement speaks much of their sacrifice and love for the Presbyterian church in Singapore. We pray that as the Hub project gains momentum, greater support will be harnessed for the next two fundraising activities, namely, the Musical Concert in 2015 and the 135th Anniversary in 2016.
