40th Session Synod AGM (2014)
The 40th Session Synod AGM was held from 28-29 March 2014 at Bethel Presbyterian Church. Unlike past AGMs which took place over three evenings during the March school holidays, this year's AGM took place on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon ending with a dinner fellowship for all participants. Rt Rev. Leow Khee Fatt was the speaker on the first day of the AGM. He reminded delegates that God's Kingdom is in the midst of His people and churches have the responsibility to manifest this Kingdom on earth. This was followed by the election for the 41st and 42nd Session Synod Executive Committee. Rt Rev. Leow also announced the appointment of Rev. Tan Cheng Huat, the current vice-moderator, as the General Secretary of the Presbyterian Church in Singapore. His term of four years will begin in January 2015. Rev. Dr Steven Gan gave the key update of Day One, which was the progress of the Presbyterian Hub. By God's providence, the hub has met all three conditions, namely the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)'s in-principle approval, the Annual Congregational approvals of three anchor churches and sufficient construction funds. Rev. Dr Gan then led a motion for delegates to give their full support and further endorsement to the Synod Development Steering Committee to proceed with the construction of the Presbyterian Hub since the three conditions were met. All delegates present supported the notion. Day Two saw the presentation of reports by various committees as well as theological seminaries and schools. The key report was the presentation on same-sex relationships by the Theological Review and Response Committee (TRRC). The TRRC team proposed to hold sessions with local churches to discuss and clarify issues and concerns before accepting the report at the next AGM. The AGM closed officially with a dinner and fellowship with much encouragement.
